License Plates

Since 1947, inmates at Folsom State Prison have manufactured California's license plates for the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Originally, the factory was located in a surplus airplane hanger near the original granite quarry. In 1953, the entire operation was dismantled and reassembled in the new factory located in the Upper Yard. The first license plates were made of steel. Today license plates are manufactured from aluminum with reflective sheeting. over the years license plates have undergone many changes, including the addition of personalized plates and special interest plates.

Through the partnership between the DMV and the Prison Industry Authority (PIA), we are able to provide productive work assignment to over 100 inmates daily at our factory in Folsom Prison.

PIA is not authorized to sell license plates directly to the public. If your agency has a special need for custom plates, please contact our Sales Department at (916) 323-2419 for assistance.
